My bizarre interest with abandoned places

A while back I fell into this habit of watching videos on youtube of twenty-somethings filming their exploration of abandoned places.

I don't know why it's always twenty-somethings who make these abandoned places videos.

Maybe compared to others they have the time, the tech-savvy, the risk aversion, or just haven't found real jobs yet.

Nonetheless, I am grateful to them, and for their video'd exploration of abandoned houses, hotels, hospitals, you name it.

The best of these youtubers usually have a deep respect for the places they go - an unspoken ethical code akin to the reverence you might have at a funeral.

So along for the ride I go, watching over their shoulders as they examine the lost paperwork in cabinets and desks from abandoned business offices, open old closets in vacant mansions, and walk the halls of spooky abandoned hospitals or asylums.

Any time something arouses a strong feeling or curiosity inside me, I try to pay attention: What's the point? Why do I like this? What does it tell me about myself?

I guess the voyeur in me likes to go behind closed doors and see how people live, the things they accumulate, the stuff they left behind that didn't seem to matter that much after all, or if it did matter - what happened such that all of these places and all of this stuff now sits orphaned in some unknown corner of the world?

It makes me think about the endings of things - how they can come suddenly, unexpectedly, disarmingly.

And it's why my team and I take great care to make sure you don't leave anything behind that matters to you.

It only takes a relatively small investment to make sure the things that bring you joy can be passed to those that matter to you.
