My wife is about to give birth to our new daughter, any day now.
She will be our fourth, and final, daughter.
And it gets me thinking about being a dad and the kind of life I want for my daughters.
And I realize, I don’t want any specific “kind” of life for them. I really just want them to find their own unique path and find out what a fulfilling life means for each of them individually.
The older I get, the more my mind seems to open up about stuff like this.
If you asked me 10 years ago, I might have a list to give you and tell you that I want to make sure my kids know about x, y, and z.
And sure, there’s a few things on my mind. But it’s more generalized, big picture stuff, like: work hard, manage your money, find and nurture good relationships with people – stuff like that.
But the more I read and learn and experience life, the more I realize how vast and rich and enthralling our universe is, and how little I actually know about it.
I read Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson and the universe we live in is mind blowing, man.
Utterly full of mystery.
Like quarks – subatomic particles that disappear and reappear again – and physicists don’t yet know where they go or why they do this!
That means that you and I are both constructed of some very strange materials.
And as humans, we all share the same building blocks, but at the same time no two of us are precisely the same.
Each of us has a unique set of puzzle pieces to play with, and a unique story to write.
For me, I want to impart onto my daughters a curiosity and sense of wonder and awe about this life. I want to nurture their creativity and their special gifts and talents so they can each thrive in the stories they write for themselves.
