When form matters more than content

I went to the barber shop this morning and this old guy Ray is cutting my hair.

Ray has been cutting hair for more than 50 years.

And as you might imagine, the guy is really a pro at making small talk.

Normally, I hate small talk.

And today Ray asks me, he says: “Doing any travel for Memorial Day weekend?”

“Nope.”

Then he proceeds to give me a 15 minute soliloquy about traffic on the I-15 between California and Vegas, and how one time there was this accident and helicopters, yada yada.

And I really don’t give a rat’s booty about talking about traffic.

But you know what?

I really loved listening to Ray talk.

I totally zoned out when, at the beginning of his speech, I heard the words “one time there was all this traffic…”

But the guy has a cadence, a rhythm to the way he talks, and it was like listening to some background music that was actually quite relaxing.

And I realized to myself, damn, you must be a really good talker for people to enjoy listening to you even if they don’t give a red cent what the hell you’re actually saying.

It’s all about the form, as opposed to the content.

But not everything in life is like that.

Sometimes, the content does matter.

Like when you set up your living trust, for example, not all of your property is meant to go into it.

What stuff do you put in a trust, and what stuff do you keep out?

When it comes to the law, there are rules that need to be followed.

And I help you make sure you follow the rules so you don’t run into problems down the road.

Tips like these, amongst many other tactics, is the kind of guidance I give in the daily emails I send.
