I said a prayer but it was dust in my mouth

The title of this email is a line from a book called Ask the Dust, written by one of my favorite authors, John Fante.

I’m not really sure what it means, but the feeling it evokes is that a longing, wish, or hope can sometimes go unfulfilled.

I used to be more spiritual, pray a lot and all of that.

But it eventually seemed to me that whether I prayed or not, stuff still happened. And there could be a “reason,” God’s will or the devil’s victory – depending on who you ask.

But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter to me.

Nowadays I try to stay aware of all the blessings I have, be grateful for them, take action in the right direction, and realize the rest is out of my control.

On some days, this is only very, very small steps.

But if you’re headed in the right direction, even a few small steps taken each day can accumulate to massive success over time.

This applies to the craft you’re passionate about, your money, relationships, new habits you’d like to create, anything.

And at the end of the day, you can at least smile to yourself, knowing you did what you could – no matter how small.

It doesn’t matter if a person believes in God or is an atheist.

Both share the same fate, and both can choose to take action to better themselves, those they care about, and the world at large.

In fact, you can address each of those interests: yourself, your loved ones, and charitable causes, all through the living trust you create.

And you don’t have to say a prayer, put out a hope or even a good vibe.
